A Proud History

Established in 1991, Good Shepherd Catholic Church has served for over fifteen years the worship and fellowship needs of Catholic families in Elk Grove, California.

Beginning as a mission church for St. Joseph Parish, early worship in Good Shepherd began in a double-trailer facility where forty families gathered on Sundays to praise our Lord. In just a few years, the congregation grew to over one hundred families, shepherd by the first official Pastor of Good Shepherd, Fr. Thomas Bland.

Good Shepherd continued to blossom under Fr. Bland, Fr. Philip Wells, and Fr. Brendan McKeefry. Over the course of the years, many parish ministries began to flourish and serve the needs of the community.
By 1997, Good Shepherd families began to formulate plans to build a worship space. The plans came to fruition two years later, in February 1999, when Good Shepherd’s current church building was open for service with a dedication ceremony preceded by Bishop William Weigand. A few months later, on August 1999, Good Shepherd, in partnership with St. Joseph, opened the doors of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School, which currently teaches children enrolled in grades K-8.

Good Shepherd Today

Good Shepherd Church

Today, Good Shepherd is a young, vibrant, and active community. With continuous growth, our Parish now serves nearly 4,000 registered households and has numerous activities.

Currently, Good Shepherd Catholic Church is led by Pastor, Rev. Leon Juchniewicz. Additionally, serving the Lord along with Fr. Leon are Parochial Vicar, Rev. Francis Stevenson; Deacon Ed Smith; and Deacon Bill Sousa.
Good Shepherd celebrates one Mass daily each morning with a growing number of participants. And during the weekend six Masses are celebrated with most of them experiencing a full seating capacity.Through twenty-eight ministries that invite and encourage faithful participation from parishioners, Good Shepherd reaches out many sectors of our community, from fomenting faith-based initiatives to strengthening social justice principles.
The City of Elk Grove is one of the fastest growing populations in the United States. The effect of this rapid growth is also present in the Catholic community of Good Shepherd through the increasing presence of our parish family as well as in our CFF program which currently instructs over 800 registered students.
